Cliff Lee is headed back to Philadelphia for the 2011 season. Lee played in Philly during the 2009 season and helped lead them to a National League Pennant. Lee played half the 2010 season with the Mariners before being traded to the Rangers for the remainder of the season and eventually the post season. Lee had a 3.18 ERA and a 12-9 record last season. Lee was almost unhittable last post season.
The Phillies offered him a 5 year 120 million dollar contract with an option of a 6th year. Both the Yankees and Rangers were said to have offered a 7 year 148 million dollar contract. Lee will already join one of if not the best rotation in the league that includes H2O, Cole Hamels, Cy Young Winner Roy Halladay, and Roy Oswalt. The Phillies lost some hitting in Jayson Werth but picked up the most valuable free agent target in Cliff Lee. Look for the Phillies to once again be pre season favorites to win the NL and possibly the World Series.
The Yankees and Rangers will probably now target 27 year old and former Cy Young winner in Zach Greinke from the Kansas City Royals.
