Miami's starting quarterback, Jacory Harris, was one of the dozen Hurricane players to be reprimanded for receiving improper benefits from former booster Nevin Shapiro.
Harris is one of eight that will miss at least one game and all twelve of them must pay restitution.
Defensive lineman Oliver Vernon will sit out six games while safety Ray Armstrong and Tight End Dyron Dye will have to sit out four games a piece. Armstrong is one of the best safeties in the nation and will likely be the biggest loss.
Miami opens their season on Labor Day with a trip to College Park to take on the Maryland Terps. This will be the first game for Al Golden and Randy Edsall at the helm of their respective programs.
Stephen Morris, who played when Harris was out for three and a half games after a concussion he suffered vs Virginia, will get the starting job in Week 1. Morris had 1,240 passing yards with 7 touchdowns but 9 interceptions last season and played a majority of the Sun Bowl game vs Notre Dame.
Harris will be allowed to play when the Ohio St Buckeyes come to face the Hurricanes at the Orange Bowl on September 17th.
